1 Corinthians

The culture in Corinth is not far from the culture of our day in which social, economic, and cultural identities define who we are and what gives us value. Position, status, wealth, and power become indicators of our identity and what we seek to achieve. The church in Corinth, which was established by Paul on his 2nd missionary journey, has lost sight of who they are in Christ and the centrality of the gospel. As such, they are caught up in dissension and division, boasting in their own wisdom. They are tolerating sexual sin in the church and taking one another to court. They are putting their own rights before others, jealous of one another, and functioning out of order in their church gatherings. Paul hears of reports of this and pens a letter to the church which is a firm but loving rebuke in order to call them back to the gospel and living out resurrection life. Practical in its imperative instruction but also deep in indicative truth, 1 Corinthians challenges believers in all times to live a life that is informed by and conformed to the gospel.
